Kenton County was formed in 1840 as the 90th county for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It was the second splitting of Campbell county. The new county was named after the pioneer Simon Kenton who had helped explore this new territory. Independence was formed with the new county in 1840 and named to mark its independence from Campbell county.

The city was incorporated in 1842.
