The "Ave Maria" is a traditional Catholic prayer based on the greeting of the angel Gabriel to Mary, mother of Jesus, as found in the Gospel of Luke (1:28). The prayer starts with "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee" (in Latin: "Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum").
The most famous musical setting is by Franz Schubert, originally composed in 1825 as "Ellens Gesang III," part of his Op. 52, but has become widely known and adapted for religious use.
